Cambridge-based Iggy’s Bakery is looking to take over management of The Bite restaurant in Menemsha this summer.

The potential new bakery would be the first time the building would be open to the public since The Bite closed its doors for renovations after the summer of 2017.

Iggy’s Bakery still needs to finalize its lease with the building’s owners, Sarah and Bob Nixon, and get final permission from the town board of health

“If that happens, and all plans go forward then...we would essentially move in and try to get our act in gear for the season,” said Iggy’s manager Nick Zappia.

Iggy’s currently operates on the Vineyard during the summer at its Edgartown location on South Summer street. Mr. Zappia said the organization plans to continue running the Edgartown operation, now in its fourth year. They were inspired to expand to Chilmark, he said, after a successful pop-up shop at the Menemsha Texaco last summer.

“The level of excitement that we felt last year when we did the pop up at Texaco was just crazy,” Mr. Zappia said.

In addition to selling pastries and breads baked on the mainland, like those at their Edgartown shop, Mr. Zappia said they plan to expand their Menemsha offerings to include croissants baked on the premises and coffee.

The Chilmark board of health meets Wednesday to discuss the proposal.
